Verity

Verity took a deep breath, and focused on pushing all her weight into the ground. The small, loose asphalt pieces still hurt her knee, but she almost appreciated it this time around. It kept her in the here and now, one of the most important things Dr. Hudson had told her when she texted her after their last session, asking her what she could do to prevent another freakout during her next mandatory fight class.

Apparently, her accidental maiming of the cadre wasn’t enough for her father to be convinced that she could defend herself better now than before her abduction.

From the last report she’d gotten out of Ben, Wells was expected to be back on base by the end of the month but she doubted he’d be resuming his fight teaching that soon. Maybe she’d send him a gift basket to apologize. She would offer to be his personal assistant to boss around until he was fully healed but with two bodyguards of her own, she doubted it was a possibility.

This time, she was paired up with another STF. Clearly, the higher ups weren’t going to risk with her injuring another instructor. She had to wonder if the decision had come from her father or if they had done it without asking for his opinion.

Her sparring partner kept eyeing her like she was going to kill him if he made one false move. But he was wrong. She could accidentally kill him if she made one false move, not the other way around.

She’d have to be super careful this time, which meant she had to focus not only on doing the fighting techniques properly and well but also not using her full strength in the execution, lest she accidentally execute one of her father’s men.

Her partner went to grab her but she moved faster and grabbed him around the middle, tackling him until they both fell down with him flat on his back. Normally, she would’ve launched forward like a sprinter at the start of a race but instead, she merely leaned forward as if she were lunging forward, while keeping her upper body low and parallel to the ground.

It was a lot less force, and based on his singular grunt, she hadn’t seriously injured him.

He grabbed her wrists and flipped them so he was on top.

Gravity wasn’t as mean to her as it had been to him but the move still hurt. She held in the gasp that would reveal just how affected she was. It didn’t help that he was still laying on top of her longer than necessary. One hundred and eighty pounds of STF on top of her made it a little hard to breathe.

She hooked his leg with her own and flipped them again before standing up and stepping away from him before he could pull her down again.

He scrambled up and refused to meet her gaze. Maybe he was worried she would tell her father that he copped a feel, despite his hands remaining in completely appropriate places for the close-quarters grappling they were doing.
